How to Haggle When Shopping Abroad

Shopping abroad is one of the many pleasures of traveling overseas. If you have a holiday coming up and shopping is part of your itinerary then it’s very important that you hit the stores as prepared as possible. Whether you are planning to buy designer items in Hong Kong or tribal handicrafts in Africa, here are some guidelines to keep in mind.

One of the things you can do to find the best deals is to shop around. Refrain from buying an item that sparks your interest from the first store you see. There is a big chance that the same item is being sold for much less in another store so be sure to check your options. However, if you are purchasing a local handicraft that supports the livelihood of the seller’s family then the few extra bucks may be worth it.

One of the most enjoyable things about shopping is haggling and getting something you really want for a much lower price. If you want to save money during your shopping trip, then you simply need to master this art. However, it’s important to know that haggling styles differ from one country to another. For instance, effective haggling in some countries means being assertive and firm. While in some countries, smiling and gentle persuasion might be your best haggling tactic. But no matter where you are, be sure to shop around first before going into the haggling game. This way, you will have an idea about the price that other merchants are offering.

Shopping Tips for Tourists

When it comes to going on a holiday trip to a foreign place, there are many ways that you can get to know the country’s culture. These ways vary from traveler to traveler. Some people familiarize themselves with the culture by gorging on the local food, taking pictures of the sights, getting to know the locals and learning the language or roaming the streets to fit in. If you’ve always been a shopping fanatic then you probably prefer to get to know a foreign place by what you can purchase. This article will give you a few tips when it comes to shopping overseas.

The first and perhaps most important thing to keep in mind when shopping abroad is to do some research beforehand. Doing plenty of research will equip you with all the information you need to make smart buying decisions. For instance, how do you know if you are buying a fake designer handbag? Or how can you make sure that you are really getting a good bargain or just being talked into buying an overpriced item? The answer lies in research. It is generally a good idea to determine first what item you are planning to buy so you can do the appropriate research.

When shopping during your holiday, it’s best to load up on local items that you cannot find anywhere else in the world, such as a fine kimono in Japan or a woven basket in South Africa. After all, why travel halfway around the world to buy items that you can get in your local mall? To find out where the best places are for buying these items, ask the concierge at your hotel or do your research online.

Driving Tips for A Holiday Road Trip

If you are planning on going on a road trip for the holiday then you’re in for a lot of fun. If you are the designated driver for the trip then the fun also comes with plenty of responsibility. To make sure that you and your passengers get to your destination in one piece, be sure to keep these reminders in mind.
“Don’t drink and drive” is a common phrase that you will see and hear everywhere but it’s still surprising how many dim-witted drivers are breaking this rule. Even if you are certain that one or two beers will not even get you close to being tipsy, it can make you drowsy and can slow down your reflexes. Instead, get enough hours of sleep and enjoy a balanced breakfast before you go.
Before planning your trip, it’s also a good idea to get the latest news updates on the weather and traffic. Throughout the trip, be sure to turn on the AM radio from time to time so you can stay updated. Be sure that you also have a map with you. Even though you know the road like the back of your hand, you might find yourself needing to make detours in case of traffic or bad weather.
If you will be using a rented car, make sure that you are familiar with the vehicle even before you hit the road. Know how to work the hazard lights, how accurate are the breaks, etc.
When driving on a road trip, maintain your peace of mind by storing all your bags in the trunk of the car. Keep valuables out of sight such as electronics, jewelry and such.

Road Trip Checklist for Your Holiday

A road trip is undoubtedly one of the most exciting adventures that you can try if you have an upcoming holiday. Whether you are planning to visit a relative in the next state with your family or you are going on an adventure trip with your group of friends, it’s true that a journey can be the destination itself. Read on for some tips when it comes to preparing for your road trip.
Be sure to get plenty of rest and nutrition at least a day before you sit behind the wheel. Even though loading up on caffeine and energy drinks seems like the best way to stay alert, their effects can gradually wear off and make it difficult for you to concentrate on the road. Get at least eight hours of sleep the previous night and don’t miss breakfast.
Even if you don’t feel tired, it’s also advisable that you pull the car over and take a break at least every couple of hours. Get out of the car, walk around to stretch your legs, enjoy the view, eat a snack or take a nap to rejuvenate yourself.
It’s always a better idea to divide the driving task between you and another passenger. This will allow you to monitor each other and keep each other company. If you are driving alone, turn on the radio and play your favorite music.
Whether you want to ask for directions or update your loved ones of your progress, you might need to use your cell phone one time or another during the trip. Be sure that you invest in a mobile phone accessory that will let you speak on your phone using a headset.

Accommodation Guidelines for Holiday Travelers

Choosing accommodation for your vacation is one of the most important things you need to do before leaving for your holiday trip. One of the biggest mistakes you can commit is to arrive at your destination with no hotel or resort to stay at. Here is a useful checklist when it comes to choosing your holiday accommodation.

The best and most important advice when booking a hotel is to make your reservation in advance. One you know you will be traveling and you are sure of your destination, be sure to pick up that phone or go online and make your reservation. Early reservation also allows you to take advantage of the lowest rates. If the hotels don’t require you to make a deposit with your credit card, you might want to reserve about 2 to 3 hotels so you can choose among them upon your arrival.

When choosing a hotel, be sure to check the available facilities that the place features. Make sure the hotel offers all the services you need. For instance, is there complimentary breakfast and an on-site restaurant or do you have to dine outside? Is there a spa and a swimming pool where you can relax on your first day? Do they allow pets? Do they offer airport pick-up and guided tours? Making sure that the hotel has everything you need will ensure that you have a much more comfortable trip. You might also want to check if there are events occurring in the hotel that will coincide with your vacation.

Before booking your accommodation, be sure that you are getting the kind of room you want. For instance, do you want a room with a view of the sunset, a private balcony and a Jacuzzi? Specify your needs and confirm the price before booking.

Airport Problems and How to Solve Them

Holiday travelers know that most trips come with their own problems–some of them can be avoided while some of them are beyond the traveler’s control. Many of these problems can occur as early as before your departure in the airport. Here are several common airport problems and how to fix them.

Flight delays are a common problem in airports. Usually, delays happen due to violent weather conditions or problems regarding air traffic. However, if you feel like the flight delay is unjustified, then you can calmly ask the airline agent to transfer you to the next flight. If you don’t want to use the same airline, you can also ask the agent to put you on a flight that belongs to another airline. There is a policy called Rule 240 which all airlines are required to follow. This law states that all airlines should grant passengers’ requests to be booked even to a competing airline.

The same holds true for canceled flights. Ideally, you wouldn’t have to approach agents since all passengers of the canceled flight are automatically transferred to the next available flight. However, if you want to book a flight from a competing airline then you can also ask for Rule 240 again.

Lost luggage is another common problem that many holiday travelers experience when vacationing. If you’ve discovered that your bags are missing, inform an airport employee right away. You will be asked to fill out a form that will ask you to describe your luggage and state its contents.

Airport Tips for Holiday Travelers

If you are going on a vacation this holiday then there are several airport guidelines that you might want to keep in mind to make sure that you kick off your trip on a high note. The first and perhaps most important rule in using airports is to arrive at least two hours before the departure of your flight. Most holiday travelers find that arriving at the airport early can greatly reduce most of the stress associated with traveling. Getting to the airport will give you plenty of time to go through security checkpoints, even if there are very long lines. After you go through security, you can do some last-minute shopping for items that you might have forgotten or you need for your trip. You can also enjoy a nice meal or snack that will fill you up before your flight.

If your baggage is exceptionally heavy or if the airport is extremely crowded, you might also want to use the baggage check service at the airport curbside. This will save you the stress of having to jostle through the crowds while carrying multiple bags.

If you are a frequent flier, you might also want to consider joining an airport club. Members of airport clubs are allowed to wait for their flights in exclusive waiting lounges where you can also enjoy free refreshments. Needless to say, this is much more comfortable than waiting in a crowded airport lobby.

Even when you feel that things are going wrong, it doesn’t pay to let your temper get the best of you when speaking to airport employees. Be sure to ask as nicely and as calmly as possible and you will almost always get what you need.

Traveling Items That You Don’t Really Need

If you are like most travelers then you are probably bothered by packing problems whenever you go on a trip. In trying to decide what to bring, you probably end up with most of your belongings laid out in your bed and trying to find a way to fit them all in you suitcases.

Even though leaving something behind can be a scary possibility when you are traveling to a new destination, there are actually things that you can afford to leave behind. If you insist on carrying everything you own, not only will you pay extra dollars at the airport but you will also have one difficult time in carrying your bags around. Read on for some advice.

Don’t pack your entire bathroom and makeup table. Unless you are vacationing in a deserted island that’s fit for Survivor contestants, chances are the hotel or resort you will be staying at will have the basic toiletries. Don’t weigh down your bags with huge bottles of shampoos, conditioners, three bars of soap and thick towels.

For your makeup, try to put everything in a compact zip-up bag that won’t take much room in your suitcase.

People go on vacations to relax and enjoy, not to audition as the next big red carpet celebrity. Leave home the fancy jewelry at home. Tourists are often easy prey for local muggers so it’s best to try and not attract attention.

Guide books are handy materials that can really be helpful when you are going on a trip. But if you are bringing six volumes of guidebooks in your bag, then you have a problem. Instead, pick one good guidebook to bring along with you and leave the rest home.
