Jet Lag Prevention Tips

If you’ve experienced traveling to a country in a different time zone before then you probably know all about the concept of jet lag. Jet lag basically occurs when the biological rhythm of the body is disrupted. Basically, it’s not much different from a situation where, say, you are moved to a graveyard shift at work. Your normal sleep routine wherein you’re in bed by 11 pm and up by 7 am is completely altered. You now work at the wee hours of the night and rest during the daytime.

Jetlag usually occurs among travelers when the time difference reaches five hours. Symptoms that you will commonly experience include sleeping difficulty, loss of appetite, fatigue, confusion and more.

If you want to make sure that you don’t experience jet lag then be sure to avoid consuming alcohol before or during your flight. Instead, load up on liquids to avoid getting dehydrated. If you are planning to stay in your destination for a long period of time then it’s also imperative that you do your best to cope up with the new time zones. This might mean learning to stay up late a couple of days from your flight. As soon as you arrive at your destination, try to avoid napping even though you are exhausted. Instead, freshen up by walking around and checking out the scenery. Get your full sleep only when night time arrives.

You might also consider enjoying a full and healthy meal once you get to your hotel or resort. Remember that coordinating your eating and sleeping schedule to your new time zone must be done as soon as possible to avoid jet lag.

Home Security While You’re on a Holiday

Whether you are going on a holiday for several days or a couple of weeks, one of the preparations you will need to attend to is keeping your home safe while you are away. Some travelers are so excited about their getaways that they forget about the houses that they are leaving behind. The last thing you want is to come home from an enjoyable vacation and find your home burglarized or at the very least, vandalized. Here are some things that you can do to keep your home protected while you are away.

One of the things that you can do is to talk to one of your friends or relatives and ask if you can redirect your mail to them. One of the most common signs of an empty house is a pile of mail lying on the doorstep so try to avoid this as much as you can. To make it appear as though your house is occupied, you should also install lights with timers inside and outside your home. These lights will turn on at a particular time every day. There are also radios that you can purchase which also work through timers. A house that has lights and sounds on will definitely make it appear as though you are inside your home.

If you wish to have more peace of mind while you are away on a holiday, you can also ask a trusted neighbor to check on your house a couple of times a day while you’re gone.

Clothing Diary for Your Holiday Wardrobe

A lot of people who are going traveling often have difficulty deciding what particular clothes to bring to their trip. Because of bad decisions or lack of preparation, these travelers often end up filling their suitcases with dozens of clothes that they never even get the chance to wear. Or they end up bringing just the right amount of clothes, only to discover that they are the wrong outfits for the trip. The ideal travel wardrobe is a collection of clothes that won’t weigh down your luggage and can provide you with the right outfit for every activity in your trip. To achieve this, you might need to create a clothing diary.

A clothing diary works if you have already established your itinerary. It doesn’t have to be carved in stone but you should at least have a rough idea of what you will be doing in your destination. You should then list down all the items that you wish to bring to your trip. On another list, write down the days of your vacation and the activities under each day. You can then start inserting items from your clothing list to each day of your trip.

Ideally, most of the clothes that you should bring should be ideal for several occasions so you can wear each item more than once during your trip. For instance, a cute and comfy t-shirt can be worn for hiking or a casual shopping trip. The simple dress you wear on the plane trip can also double as your outfit for a special dinner.

Travel Journal: Some Writing Tips

If traveling is one of your passions then you might want to start keeping travel journals to document your escapades. Some travelers who do keep travel journals write them in such a way that nobody ever wants to read the journals—not even their own family and friends. Even if you are not exactly going for a literary masterpiece, you want to write your journal in a way that can capture your special trip in a sincere, fun and touching way.
Start out by setting the scene in the first paragraph. Make sure the scene is able to draw the interest of your readers. Instead of using cliché descriptions like a “blue sky” or “green fields with blooming flowers”, try to write something unique to set the mood—like a group of children playing nearby or an old man playing the guitar by the sidewalk.
Don’t forget to include conflicts that you’ve encountered during your trip. Whether it’s lost luggage or losing directions on your way to the hotel, conflicts are the core of any good story. Document as well how you managed to find your way back from these obstacles. If you are going to include conflict, you also should not forget to include humor. Some travel journals become boring because their writers are so intent in writing the perfect travel story that they leave out the goofy and embarrassing parts. When in truth, these funny parts are actually what make the trip worthwhile. Go ahead and write about how you ordered ox brain by mistake at the restaurant, how you had a swimsuit malfunction at the beach or how the metal detector went off at the airport because of your pierced belly button. These are the moments that will make you laugh when looking back on your trip.

Travel Quick-Fixes

Whether you are traveling to the Australian outback or vacationing at the beaches of Hawaii, holidays can sometimes bring their own hassles. To avoid these nuisances, it’s usually best to be prepared. However, there are still some circumstances when you might find yourself dealing with problems that you did not expect. Here are a random set of travel hassles and the bet quick-fixes for them.
If you are vacationing in a hot and humid area, then you may find your clothes bearing what is called neck rings or collar rings. These unsightly stains are caused by your sweat combined with dust and dirt in the area. To remove these stains, you can use shampoo to wash your clothes. Since the ring stains are primarily caused by body oils and shampoos are designed to remove body oils produced from the scalp, shampoo can be greatly effective.
Stepping on gum is probably a universal nuisance (except perhaps in Singapore where gum-chewing is banned). If you run into this problem abroad then you might need to wait before you get to your hotel room to fix it. Ask the innkeeper or concierge for some ice and use this to harden the gum on the sole of your shoe. Once the gum hardens, scrape it off with a dull knife.
Insects like flies and mosquitoes are another problem when it comes to traveling. This is why it’s important to bring a big bottle of insect repellant. If the insects are flying around your room, use some hairspray to solve the problem.

Travel with Kids on a Hassle-Free Flight

If you are going on a holiday and you are flying to your destination then traveling with a baby or a toddler can be a challenging experience. Ideally, people who go on holidays choose to leave their little children behind. However, if you don’t feel at peace unless your little ones are with you and you want the holiday to be a family vacation then here are some guidelines to make sure that you have a hassle-free flight with your kids.

Babies under the age of two are generally not required by airlines to have their own seat on the plane. However, to ensure your baby’s convenience, it might be best to purchase him his own seat and then use a car seat to keep him secure and comfortable throughout the flight. Many car seats are also certified for air travel so be sure to pick these designs. Make arrangements with the airline beforehand as well.

The flight can increase pressure on babies’ ears especially during the plane’s takeoff and landing. To avoid discomfort to your baby, have him suck on a pacifier or feed him his bottle of milk during these times.

Traveling with toddlers should generally be easy but if you have a tot who likes to run around the place then it can be more challenging for you. One of the things that you can do is keep him entertained for the duration of the flight. How? Wrap up new toys and little surprises and use these to pique his interest when he is starting to cause trouble. The wrapped surprises will certainly make him curious and will hold his attention.

A holiday trip is supposed to be a time to unwind and let go of all your inhibitions. In other words, if you’ve been working too hard then a holiday gives you the chance to let your hair down. However, some holiday makers follow this advice to the extent that they end up letting go of themselves too much—in terms of dining. Ever notice how some of your relatives or friends come back from their vacations not just with souvenirs but with extra pounds as well? Here are some ways that you can avoid the same fate.

Before eating out, try to munch on something healthy in your hotel room or resort, such as fruit or oatmeal biscuits. This will satisfy your hunger pangs and ensure that you don’t overeat in the restaurant. Once in the restaurant, you can always ask the manager about healthier options. For instance, instead of the sweet and starchy rolls that your steak came with, perhaps it’s possible to ask for a plate of vegetables instead. Unless you are eating in a fast food (which you shouldn’t be if you don’t want to gain weight), you can always ask for your meal to be prepared in a special way.

Try not to order more than you can eat. Ordering a lot of food will encourage you to finish more than what you really need to eat. A smaller portion will ensure that you eat only the right amount of food. If you are dining with a companion, you can order big portions and then split them between yourselves.

Traveling Reminders For Women

Traveling alone can be an exhilarating experience. Sure, it’s always fun to travel with a companion but there is nothing quite like the experience of enjoying a new place and culture all by yourself. When it comes to traveling alone, both men and women need to exercise caution to ensure the safety of their holiday. However, one cannot deny that women should take extra care of themselves when going on a holiday. Here are some safety tips for female travelers, whether you are going solo or with a companion.

One of the most important preparations that female travelers must do before their trip is to learn about the dress customs of their destination. Even though you are free to dress as you wish in your country, there are still a lot of societies that stick to their conservative ways especially when it comes to women’s dress codes. You might be attracting attention or offending locals by wearing revealing clothes. Instead, observe how the local women are dressing and dress as closely as possible to their style.

Try not to look the part of a tourist. Your unsure steps and confused wandering gaze are all giveaway signs that you don’t know where you are heading. Some people might quickly pick up on this and take advantage of you. Instead, try to act confident and act like you know where you are headed (even if you don’t).

When going on a holiday to a foreign destination, be sure to do some research about the places to avoid. Better yet, try to interview some locals about the place you plan to go to so you can get an idea.

Packing Essentials for Staying in a Hostel

If you know your horror movies, then the word “hostel” probably makes you imagine European backpackers tortured in dark dungeons, thanks to Eli Roth’s Hostel movies. But back to the real world, a hostel can be a great accommodation choice for holiday makers who are traveling on a budget. Basically, hostels resemble dormitories where one can rent a room and a bed for a cheap price. Facilities like a common bathroom and kitchen are also provided. If you are planning to stay in a hostel for your trip then here are several things that you need to remember to pack.

If you are going to an unfamiliar foreign country then you might want to take along a travel phrase book with you. Before you leave, you might also want to memorize common expressions that you will be using in your trip such as greetings like “hello” and “thank you”.

Be sure that you also bring bottled mineral water. With hostels, you are basically responsible for almost everything so don’t expect to have clean water served for you.

Bath essentials are also something that you must not forget to pack in your bag. Bring along a toiletry kit that has all your bath supplies like washcloths, hand towels, soaps, shampoo and conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste and more. If you are planning to do some dining inside your room, you should also bring along those camping meal utensils to make eating more convenient.

As always, be sure to bring basic first-aid supplies like insect repellant, antiseptics, special medications and more.

If you are like most professionals who go on a holiday then you probably cannot afford to escape civilization for long. Even while relaxing on a tropical beach in Mexico or sitting in a campfire in Nepal, you probably need to stay in touch from time to time with your colleagues, clients or boss. This is where the internet comes in. Even though you may want to strip down your lifestyle to basics for your holiday vacation, you will still need the internet for a dozen of things, like booking your flight and accommodation, updating your loved ones about your trip, planning your itinerary and more.

Purchasing a 3G service may seem like the best way to use the Web while you’re on the road but this can amount to a very high expense. With the money that your holiday alone is costing you, you probably want to cut back on as much expenses as you can. One of the reasons why 3G services are so expensive is because of the high charges of international data roaming. Even the operators behind 3G are warning customers about the high costs of uploading and downloading content via 3G.

Instead, opt for WiFi connection. WiFi prepaid accounts provide you with an online management tool that will allow you to control your budget. This tool also eliminates the need to enter your credit card information each time you use the service, hence, increasing your security over the Web. So the next time you go on a holiday, consider WiFi for better value for your money .
